First Grade News

Math:

This past month we learned about addition and subtraction problems up to 20.  We reviewed fact families up to 20.  Another standard that we covered was finding the missing number.  (Ex. 6+_=10)  Then we switched gears and learned about solid figures (Ex. Sphere, cylinder, pyramid…)and plane shapes. (Ex. Rectangle, circle…)  Right now we are working on following the directions on maps and symmetry.

Reading:

In reading we have read several different stories.  We have read a tall tale, classic folk tale, riddles (which all the students enjoyed reading), classic animal fantasy, photo essay, realistic fiction, fantasy, and nonfiction.  We also read a couple different versions of “The Gingerbread Man or Girl” and then we compared the likes and differences.

This week we will be reading What a Sight!  by Carolyn Crimi and Lost in the Museum by Miriam Cohen.

Writing:

We have been focusing on the difference between adjectives, verbs, and nouns.  The first graders became chefs and we made compound words in our recipe book.  This week we will be chefs again and work on the difference between: antonyms (Ex. In, out), synonyms (small, tiny), and rhyming words (train, plain).

For phonics we worked on the long sounds: u, e (ee, ea), a (ai, ay), and o (oa, ow).  The final digraphs that we reviewed include: –sh, -ch, -th, -tch, -ed, and -ing.  We also reviewed contractions.

 Science:

For science we have studied about different kinds of weather and what are some tools that we can use to measure weather.  We became knowledgeable about the four different seasons and what they will look like.

Social Studies:

In social studies, we have been focusing on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
